Alerts cannot be sent to users in roles

I am using this FBA setup for my SharePoint site and I wanted to add users to roles, and then place each role in a SharePoint security group, but after doing this the users would not receive any of the alerts to which they were subscribed.

I noticed that alerts cannot be sent to users unless those users are explicitly added to a SharePoint group. This really alleviates the purpose of having Roles at all.

Does anyone know of a way around this? Thanks!

I've noticed this too and odn't have a great solution.
